Josh Hutcherson’s acting is wonderful in this scene and truly captures the vulnerability and confliction of Peeta’s character. Without speaking a word, his eyes say it all: shock from seeing Cato killed, momentary relief in believing the Games are over, hope as he realizes he and Katniss get to go home together, sadness for all they’ve endured and seen. For a split second there’s a hint of a smile on his face and in his eyes when he realizes it’s all over and they’re both alive, but it quickly fades, almost as if he feels guilty for it, and he tucks his face into Katniss’s shoulder as he remembers at what cost. Also, he is incredibly adorable here, like a puppy you really want to cuddle.
